Workers can manually trigger alerts via a cord or button to pause production when defects, part shortages, tool malfunctions, or safety issues arise. Toyota's original system uses a two-pull mechanism: the first pull requests help without stopping the line, while the second either keeps it running or halts it. Since 2014, Toyota has been replacing cords with wireless buttons. Alerts can be logged for continuous improvement analysis. The concept traces back to post-WWII quality innovations by W.
