Angola's largest mobile operator, Unitel, was hit by a cyberattack at 2:20 am on July 28, 2026 — the same day it began trading on the Angola BODIVA stock exchange following a government IPO that raised over $320 million. The attack caused widespread network outages, with 4G/5G and digital services still disrupted days later. Financial services in the capital Luanda were affected, forcing residents to use cash. Security experts highlight insufficient network segmentation and limited cybersecurity budgets as key vulnerabilities for African telecoms, recommending attack surface reduction and practiced incident response processes. The incident follows a pattern of cyberattacks on African telecom providers, including MTN Group and Telecom Namibia.
