A coalition of thirteen major publishers including Penguin Random House, Elsevier, and HarperCollins has won a $19.5 million default judgment against shadow library Anna's Archive in a New York federal court. Judge Jed S. Rakoff granted maximum statutory damages of $150,000 for each of 130 works, totaling $19.5 million. Beyond the damages, the court issued a permanent injunction targeting global intermediaries — including domain registries, registrars, hosting providers, Cloudflare, and others — ordering them to disable Anna's Archive's domains. The operators, who remain anonymous, are also ordered to unmask their identities within 10 days. Collection of the damages is considered unlikely given the operators' anonymity. The site's three domains remain active at time of writing, and the operators are expected to deploy backup domains as they have done previously.
