Anthropic has joined Frontier, the carbon removal coalition, becoming the first pure AI startup to do so. The move contributes to a new $915 million funding tranche, nearly doubling Frontier's total pledges to $1.8 billion. Frontier has so far contracted nearly $700 million across 50+ projects to remove 1.8 million tons of carbon. Anthropic's membership is notable given AI companies' recent energy-intensive expansion, though the company has yet to publish a sustainability report. Frontier is also shifting strategy toward fewer, larger bets on projects capable of removing a gigaton of CO2 annually, with new contracts running 8–10 years and requiring recipients to show a path to government support.
