OAuth tokens from Claude Free, Pro, and Max tiers are only permitted for use with Claude Code and Claude.ai. The policy has technically existed since at least February 2024, but was being widely flouted by third-party tools that allowed users to route cheaper subscription tokens instead of paying API rates. Anthropic began enforcing the ban in January 2026, banning accounts and blocking spoofed Claude Code traffic. OpenCode has already removed support for Claude subscription keys in response. The move is framed as protecting Anthropic's revenue model from token arbitrage, while OpenAI took the opportunity to publicly endorse third-party harness use with its own Codex subscriptions. ## Full article daily.dev links to this article rather than hosting it.
