# Anthropic in talks for a second $45B compute deal with Nscale

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Anthropic is reportedly negotiating a second $45 billion compute deal with Nscale, just two months after signing a first deal of the same size. The new contract would add a 460 MW building at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia running Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips, doubling Anthropic's reservation there to 920 MW, with a right of first refusal on a third building. Nscale's IPO filing already lists Anthropic agreements worth up to $44.6B, and both companies are heading toward public markets amid investor skepticism over AI infrastructure spending versus profits.

## Content

Nscale and Anthropic are reportedly in talks for a second $45bn compute deal, about two months after signing a first one of the same size. Bloomberg's sources say the talks are ongoing and the terms could still change.

## What the new deal would cover

The contract would cover a second 460 MW building at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia, running Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. That would double Anthropic's reservation there to 920 MW. Anthropic also holds a right of first refusal on the campus's expected third building.

The first contract is a 6-year, 460 MW lease with delivery starting in late 2027. It works out to roughly $7.5bn a year, or about $16.3M per MW. Monarch's first phase is designed for 1.35 GW across three buildings, so Anthropic could end up holding the whole initial development. Nscale's IPO filing already lists Anthropic agreements worth up to about $44.6bn.

## The IPO backdrop

Both companies are heading toward public listings. Nscale is pursuing a New York IPO at a valuation around $30bn, and has faced investor pushback on that number. Microsoft has dropped out as an expected main tenant at Monarch because of grid connection delays, which makes a second Anthropic deal more useful to the pitch. Anthropic is expected to go public this year, and its own investors are reportedly pushing for a lower valuation.

The timing is awkward. AI stocks have sold off, partly over worries about CoreWeave's $50bn debt load, and investors are openly doubting whether huge infrastructure spending can be matched by profits.

## What could go wrong

A second deal would strengthen Nscale's listing story, but its value rests on execution. Monarch has to energize its first building, and the Vera Rubin racks have to arrive on schedule in late 2027. Given the grid delays that already cost Nscale one tenant, that isn't a small caveat.

## Questions this post answers

### How much is Anthropic reportedly paying Nscale for compute capacity in its first deal?

The first Anthropic-Nscale contract, signed in August, is a 6-year, 460 MW lease worth about $7.5 billion a year, or roughly $16.3 million per MW, with delivery starting in late 2027. A reported second deal of similar size (about $45 billion total) would double Anthropic's reservation at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus to 920 MW.

### What chips will run in Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus for Anthropic's compute deal?

The reported second building at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia would run Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips, adding 460 MW of capacity. Combined with the first 460 MW building, this would bring Anthropic's total reservation at the campus to 920 MW, out of a planned 1.35 GW first phase across three buildings.
