The decision, made by the Department of War (formerly the Department of Defense under the Trump administration), effectively bars Anthropic from military contracts. The conflict stems from Anthropic's refusal to remove safety guardrails that would have allowed its AI to be used for fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance. CEO Dario Amodei called the designation 'legally unsound' and said the company has no choice but to challenge it in court.
