# App Events: Send events from Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions

**[Shopify Developer changelog](https://daily.dev/sources/shopifychangelog)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Starting with Shopify API version 2027-01, Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions can send App Events directly to Shopify without network access or an app backend. Calling the new emit method sends a custom event with an event handle and optional attributes; Shopify automatically attaches the app and shop info. Events show up in Dev Dashboard logs alongside server-sent App Events, and standard declared events also appear in merchant analytics. Each extension can send a burst of 20 events, then 2 per second, and events only send after the buyer allows analytics processing. These events aren't used for billing; billing events must still come from the app's backend.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I send App Events from a Shopify Checkout UI extension without a backend?

Set the extension's API version to 2027-01 or later in shopify.extension.toml, then call the emit method, for example shopify.appEvents.emit("offer_viewed", {offer_id: "summer_bundle", placement: "order_summary"}). Shopify automatically attaches the app and shop info, so no access token or shop ID is needed, and no network access or app backend is required.

### What is the rate limit for emitting App Events from a Shopify UI extension?

Each extension can send a burst of 20 events, followed by a sustained rate of 2 events per second. When emit() fails to send an event, for example due to an invalid event or exceeding the rate limit, it returns {success: false, error} so the extension can handle the failure.

_Teams instrumenting checkout extensions can keep up with API limits and quirks like this via daily.dev._

### Can Shopify checkout extension events be used for app billing?

No, events sent from Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions aren't processed for billing purposes. To report usage for Shopify App Pricing, billing events must still be sent from the app's backend rather than from the extension itself.
