# Apple's New M6 and M5 Pro Mac Minis Push Local AI Performance

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 4 min read · 7 upvotes · 2 comments

## Summary

Apple announced new Mac mini models built around the M6 and M5 Pro chips, with preorders open now and shipping starting September 22. The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 with a 12-core CPU/GPU and up to 32GB unified memory, claimed to be up to 40% faster than the M4 on CPU tasks and up to 4x faster for AI workloads. The M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699 with up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 64GB unified memory, 307GB/s memory bandwidth, and a claimed 8.5x faster LLM prompt processing versus the M2 Pro. Both get Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while the M5 Pro adds Thunderbolt 5, which Apple says can be used to cluster multiple Mac minis together to run larger AI models locally.

## Content

Apple has updated the Mac mini with two new configurations: a base model running the M6 chip and a higher-end version with the M5 Pro. Both are available to preorder now, shipping September 22.

## What's in each model

The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 (Rs 99,900 in India). It has a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, up to 32GB of unified memory, and memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU performance and 4x faster AI performance compared to the M4 Mac mini. The M6 is Apple's first chip built on TSMC's 2nm process, and it includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine along with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core — which accounts for the roughly 30% higher peak AI GPU compute versus the M5.

Connectivity gets a meaningful upgrade across both models: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet standard, with optional 10Gb Ethernet. The M6 model has three Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The M5 Pro model starts at $1,699. It steps up to an 18-core CPU, up to 20 GPU cores, up to 64GB of unified memory, 307GB/s memory bandwidth, Thunderbolt 5, and up to 8TB of SSD storage. Apple says Thunderbolt 5 can also be used to cluster multiple Mac minis together for running larger models locally.

## The LLM performance claims

Apple's headline numbers for local AI inference are aggressive. In LM Studio, the M6 Mac mini reportedly processes LLM prompts 4.8x faster than the M4 version and 13.5x faster than the M1. The M5 Pro is claimed to be 8.5x faster than the M2 Pro at the same task.

The usual caveats apply: actual performance depends on model size, quantization, runtime, and context length. But the direction is clear — Apple is explicitly marketing this machine for local model inference and "always-on agentic computing."

## Mac mini vs. a VPS for local AI workloads

This is worth thinking through honestly, because the marketing framing of a "personal AI server" is doing a lot of work.

For a business running agents that interact with CRMs, APIs, and lightweight scripts, a VPS is often the more practical choice. You get a data center, a public IP, stable networking, managed backups, and no physical hardware to maintain. A 32GB VPS runs roughly $40–80/month, which adds up to $1,440–2,880 over three years — at which point you have nothing to show for it.

The M6 Mac mini at $899, spread over three years, costs about $25/month before electricity. Running continuously adds a few dollars more. For workloads where privacy matters — processing internal documents, storing voice data on-premises, running local models without paying per-API-call — that math starts to look reasonable.

But 32 or 64GB of unified memory doesn't mean you can run any model you want. Truly heavy inference still needs more powerful hardware or cloud resources. And for medium-sized businesses, the more important factors are usually reliability, uptime, and ease of maintenance — areas where a managed VPS has real advantages over a physical box sitting in an office.

The honest framing: the Mac mini makes sense as a local inference node when privacy or API cost savings genuinely justify owning the hardware. It's a harder sell as primary infrastructure.

## One complicating factor

Memory prices have risen sharply. DRAM contract prices reportedly climbed 90–95% quarter-on-quarter earlier this year, driven by AI data center demand. Mac mini prices have gone up roughly 50% in under two years as a result. That's worth factoring into any cost comparison — the $899 entry point is already higher than it would have been a couple of years ago, and it may not be the ceiling.

## Questions this post answers

### What are the specs and price of the new M6 Mac mini?

The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 and includes a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, up to 32GB unified memory, and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth. It is Apple's first chip built on TSMC's 2nm process, with a dual 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in each GPU core. Apple claims 40% faster CPU performance and 4x faster AI performance versus the M4 Mac mini, with three Thunderbolt 4 ports and Wi-Fi 7 support.

### How much faster is the M6 Mac mini at running LLMs compared to the M1?

In LM Studio testing, the M6 Mac mini reportedly processes LLM prompts 13.5 times faster than the M1 Mac mini and 4.8 times faster than the M4 version. The M5 Pro model is claimed to be 8.5 times faster than the M2 Pro at the same task, though actual results depend on model size, quantization, runtime, and context length.

### Is a Mac mini or a VPS cheaper for running local AI models for a business?

Over three years, an $899 M6 Mac mini costs about $25/month before electricity, versus $40-80/month for a 32GB VPS, which totals $1,440-2,880 with nothing owned at the end. The Mac mini makes financial sense when privacy needs or per-API-call cost savings justify owning hardware, but a managed VPS still offers better reliability, uptime, and maintenance for medium-sized businesses.

> For LLM, x64 CPU + Nvidia GPU are currently better suited. Arm is better suited for portable devices. For a server, a Linux support is required complete. The mac mini is not suitable for this purpose now.

> Hopefully this will draw some users toward Apple and make the RTX demand go down, in turn bringing prices down. You have to imagine market saturation will be achieved sometime near the end of next year.
