Apple has announced a new privacy feature for its iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro (M5) that enhances user privacy by limiting the precision of location data shared with cellular carriers. Instead of transmitting exact GPS coordinates, the feature allows devices to share only an approximate location, such as a neighborhood-level area.

This enhancement is designed to make it more challenging for law enforcement, hackers, and surveillance entities to leverage carrier data to precisely track user locations. Although this feature currently supports select carriers in Germany, Thailand, the UK, and the US, it does not impact location sharing with apps or emergency services, ensuring essential functionalities remain unaffected.

The new ability addresses longstanding concerns over privacy breaches linked with carrier networks. Traditionally, mobile carriers have accessed detailed GPS location data via built-in cellular protocols like RRLP (2G/3G) and LPP (4G/5G). To protect users from such risks, Apple has embedded this privacy feature in its iOS 26.3 release.
