# Apple's rumored M7 Ultra with 1.5TB RAM could make your desk a local AI server

**[Trends](https://daily.dev/sources/trends)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A rumor suggests Apple is developing an M7 Ultra chip with up to 1.5TB of unified memory, which would enable running 400B-700B parameter AI models locally on a Mac workstation. The unified memory architecture means the full pool is shared across CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine with no data copying overhead. For comparison, eight Nvidia B200 server GPUs together offer about 1.44TB of HBM3e memory, putting a single Mac in the same capacity ballpark. However, bandwidth remains a gap — Apple's M3 Ultra tops out at 819GB/s versus ~8TB/s per B200 card. The biggest practical obstacle isn't chip design but DRAM supply: Apple already pulled its 128GB Mac Studio due to memory shortages, and a 1.5TB config would require far more of the same constrained memory, likely limiting availability to film studios and research labs rather than everyday developers.

## Content

A rumor is circulating that Apple is building an M7 Ultra chip with support for up to 1.5TB of unified memory. That's more than double what today's M3 Ultra Macs can hold, and the reason people are paying attention is straightforward: that's enough memory to run genuinely large AI models locally, without a cloud subscription in sight.

For context, eight Nvidia Blackwell B200 server GPUs together provide about 1.44TB of HBM3e memory. If the M7 Ultra rumor is accurate, a single Mac workstation would be in the same ballpark, at least on raw capacity. The bandwidth story is different — the B200 hits around 8TB/s per card, while Apple's M3 Ultra currently reaches 819GB/s — but for inference on large models, capacity often matters more than peak bandwidth.

The unified memory angle is what makes this interesting architecturally. Apple's CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine all share the same pool, so there's no copying data between processors. That reduces latency and power draw compared to a system where the GPU has its own dedicated VRAM. It also means the full 1.5TB would be available to the GPU for model weights, not just a slice of it.

The community reaction has ranged from genuinely excited to breathlessly hyperbolic. Some posts are already claiming you'll be able to run "Opus 4.8 level intelligence" on 300GB and that "everyone on Earth" will have a local model on their desk in two years. That's getting ahead of the actual rumor by quite a bit. What the specs would realistically support is running models in the 400B-700B parameter range at reasonable quantization levels — which is impressive, but not magic.

There's a real catch here: DRAM supply. Apple already pulled its 128GB Mac Studio this year because of memory shortages and climbing prices. A 1.5TB configuration would need vastly more of that same constrained memory. If supply stays tight, this becomes a product for film studios and research labs, not developers looking to run local inference on their workstations.

Apple hasn't confirmed the M7 Ultra exists, let alone its specs. Final configurations could change significantly before any announcement. The chip design may be the easy part — getting enough affordable DRAM to ship at volume is the actual problem to watch.
