Apple has acquired the Swift Package Index (SPI), a search engine for open source Swift packages, with creator Dave Verwer joining Apple to continue development. SPI will remain open source under Apache 2.0 and continue operating as before, but Apple promises accelerated development including package signing, identity features, and — notably — removal of the long-standing GitHub-only dependency. Currently hosting over 11,000 packages, SPI will evolve toward a proper package registry model that is source-host agnostic. Some developers are cautious about an independent community resource coming under full corporate control.
