# Application-Layer DDoS Attacks in 2026

## Summary

Layer 7 DDoS attacks have surged 104% over two years, yet most organizations rely on L3/L4 protections that don't address application-layer threats. These attacks target compute-heavy resources like APIs, databases, and authentication flows using legitimate-looking traffic that bypasses volume-based detection. CDNs and WAFs are widely deployed but frequently misconfigured — permissive rate-limit defaults, API coverage gaps, and origin IP exposure are the most common failure points. Modern attack tooling using real browser instances (Selenium, Puppeteer) and residential proxy networks makes bot detection unreliable. Host-based WAFs compound the problem by sharing resources with the application they protect. Practical hardening steps include separating WAF infrastructure from origin servers, tuning rate limits against real baseline traffic, enforcing request payload size limits, and regularly testing L7 defenses after infrastructure changes. Across Red Button simulations, 68% of identified faults are rated severe or critical, with average first-test DDoS Resiliency Scores well below recommended targets.
