## Summary

Artery Technology has introduced the AT32F406 and AT32F408, two new Arm Cortex-M4F microcontrollers running up to 216 MHz with DSP instructions and an FPU. The AT32F408 adds a USB 2.0 OTG High-Speed controller with an integrated on-chip PHY, targeting industrial automation, IoT, USB accessories, and gaming peripherals. Both chips offer up to 512 KB Flash, 192 KB SRAM, QSPI expansion, extensive analog and timer peripherals, and are supported by Artery's AT32 IDE, VS Code extension, and BSP libraries. Evaluation boards AT-START-F406 and AT-START-F408 with Arduino-compatible headers are available, though purchasing details are not yet public. Both MCUs are currently in sampling with mass production underway.

## Questions this post answers

### What is the difference between the Artery AT32F406 and AT32F408 microcontrollers?

The AT32F408 adds a USB 2.0 OTG High-Speed controller with an integrated on-chip PHY and a dedicated 4 KB buffer, a feature the AT32F406 lacks. Both are Arm Cortex-M4F MCUs running up to 216 MHz with DSP instructions and an FPU, up to 512 KB Flash, and 192 KB SRAM, but the AT32F406 tops out at 57 GPIOs versus 54 on the AT32F408.

### Does the Artery AT32F408 microcontroller work as a drop-in replacement for STM32 chips?

No, the AT32F406 and AT32F408 do not offer similar pin or peripheral compatibility with any STM32 SKUs. This contrasts with Artery's earlier AT32F403ACGU7, which served as a drop-in (though not direct clone) replacement for ST's STM32F103 series, as seen in a 49-cent Black Pill clone board from 2023.
