# Asahi Linux Hopes To Ship A Release Soon With Apple M3 Device Support

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Asahi Linux developers are nearing a downstream release with Apple M3 device support, including working webcam support, microphone handling improvements, and USB 3.0/Thunderbolt functionality after reverse engineering the M3's new USB port controller. Work also continues on PSCI-based power management for mainline kernel compatibility, plus early-stage Apple M4/M5 bring-up and GPU direct scan-out support, though upstreaming into mainline Linux will take additional time.

## Questions this post answers

### Does Asahi Linux support Apple M3 Macs yet?

Apple M3 support is nearly ready but not yet officially released as of the latest progress report; it exists in downstream Asahi Linux code with working USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, webcam, and microphone handling. Developers expect to cut a release with M3 support in the coming weeks, though upstreaming into the mainline Linux kernel will take longer.

### Why can't Asahi Linux use standard PSCI power management on Apple Silicon?

Apple Silicon and the current Asahi driver design don't fit cleanly within the Power State Coordination Interface (PSCI) constraints required by mainline ARM64 Linux, so only downstream Asahi code currently supports the deep Wait For Interrupt (WFI) instruction. Developers are working on a UEFI Runtime Service based PSCI conduit to bridge this gap for mainline compatibility.

> USB 3 and Thunderbolt support after reverse-engineering a new controller is a substantial milestone. The downstream release is useful now, but PSCI-based power management and eventual mainline support are what will make M3 machines easier to maintain across kernel upgrades.
