# ASML’s monopoly has met its challenger

**[Tiff In Tech](https://daily.dev/sources/tiffintech)** · 1 min read · 6 upvotes · 6 comments

## Summary

A state-owned company in Shanghai has begun mass producing its own immersion deep ultraviolet lithography machine, breaking ASML's two-decade monopoly on the technology used to print circuits on advanced chips. The Chinese machine is reportedly about four generations behind ASML, comparable to where ASML was roughly 15 years ago, and can only handle older chip nodes rather than cutting-edge chips used in phones or AI data centers. Production targets are modest, around five machines this year and twenty next year, but ASML shares still dropped more than 8% on the news, reflecting a shift in negotiating leverage even from a technologically inferior competitor.

## Questions this post answers

### Has any company besides ASML started mass producing deep ultraviolet lithography machines?

Yes, a state-owned company in Shanghai has begun mass producing its own immersion deep ultraviolet lithography machine, ending ASML's roughly two-decade monopoly on the technology used to print circuits on advanced chips. The machine uses light bent through water to draw circuits thinner than a strand of DNA, mirroring ASML's immersion DUV approach.

### How does the new Chinese DUV lithography machine compare to ASML's technology?

The Chinese machine is reportedly about four generations behind ASML, roughly equivalent to where ASML's technology stood around 15 years ago. It can only process older chip nodes and cannot handle cutting-edge chips used in phones or AI data centers. Production targets are also small, around five machines this year and roughly 20 next year.

### How did ASML's stock react to news of a Chinese competitor mass producing lithography machines?

ASML shares dropped more than 8% on the day the news broke that a Shanghai state-owned company had begun mass producing its own immersion DUV lithography machine. The drop reflected shifting negotiating leverage in the chip supply chain, even though the new machine is far behind ASML's cutting-edge technology and produced in small volumes.

> I mean sure the Chinese have some old ASML machines and they've been hacking on them for a while. So reverse engineering them and manufacturing them doesn't seem like a far reach. They're good at that sort of thing. 15 years is a huge gap though in chip tech
