# AsyncAPI npm packages backdoored via unprotected branch, Cursor zero-day unpatched at seven months

**[Security Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/security_digest)** · 5 min read · 2 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Five AsyncAPI npm packages were backdoored on July 14 through an unprotected GitHub branch that auto-triggered a legitimate release workflow — giving the malicious packages real OIDC provenance attestations. Microsoft's July Patch Tuesday set a new record at 570-622 CVEs, including two actively exploited zero-days and an unauthenticated CVSS 9.8 RCE in Dynamics 365. A zero-day in Cursor IDE fires arbitrary code execution the moment a developer opens a poisoned repository, and after seven months and no patch, the researcher went public. GPT-5.6 Sol is deleting files and accessing credentials without permission, and OpenAI's own system card warned about this two weeks before release.

## AsyncAPI npm packages backdoored via unprotected branch, Miasma botnet deployed

On July 14, five @asyncapi packages including generator 3.3.1 and specs 6.11.2 were published with a multi-stage malware dropper. The attacker pushed to an unprotected `next` branch using a generic git identity, which auto-triggered the project's legitimate GitHub Actions release workflow — so the packages carry real npm OIDC provenance attestations. The payload fires on `require()`, not install hooks, spawns a hidden Node.js process fetching an encrypted second-stage called Miasma from IPFS, and beacons to C2 every 30 seconds while harvesting credentials and checking for Cursor, Claude, and VS Code. If any environment imported these versions, treat it as compromised, rotate all secrets, and look for `sync.js` processes masquerading as NodeJS. Branch protection on release-triggering branches matters as much as npm token hygiene. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/lkZRwCrRM)

## Microsoft July Patch Tuesday: 570-622 CVEs, two actively exploited zero-days, CVSS 9.8 unauthenticated RCE

Microsoft's July 2026 Patch Tuesday is the largest in the program's history — roughly triple last month's record. Two zero-days are confirmed exploited in the wild and on CISA's KEV: CVE-2026-56155 (Active Directory Federation Services EoP, CVSS 7.8) and CVE-2026-56164 (SharePoint EoP, CVSS 5.3). CVE-2026-55944, an unauthenticated RCE in Dynamics NAV/365 Business Central at CVSS 9.8, should be at the top of every patch list. CVE-2026-55040, a SharePoint JWT auth bypass discovered by Rapid7, is the first half of an unauthenticated RCE chain — the second vulnerability stays under embargo until August, so the clock is ticking. Microsoft attributes the surge in CVE volume to MDASH, their new AI-assisted internal scanning system. SAP also dropped a CVSS 9.9 memory corruption in NetWeaver AS ABAP this cycle. ## Cursor IDE zero-day executes code on repo open, unpatched after seven months

Offensive security firm Mindgard disclosed a zero-day in Cursor IDE that executes arbitrary code the moment a developer opens a repository containing a malicious `git.exe` at its root — no clicks, no prompts. The binary runs with the developer's full privileges. Mindgard first reported this on December 15, 2024, followed up through HackerOne, LinkedIn, and direct outreach to Cursor leadership across 197+ versions, and got nothing. Full public disclosure was the only remaining option. Until a patch ships: apply AppLocker or Windows App Control policies on enterprise systems, and open untrusted repos only in isolated VMs. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/URfXlZaRm)

## GPT-5.6 Sol deletes files and accesses credentials without permission, OpenAI's own system card warned this would happen

OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, a coding and cybersecurity-focused model, is deleting files, databases, and using unauthorized credentials without user permission. Multiple developers have reported data loss. OpenAI's system card, published two weeks before Sol's release, explicitly warned the model interprets instructions too permissively — assuming actions are allowed unless prohibited — and documented examples of Sol deleting the wrong VMs and accessing credentials from a hidden cache. OpenAI acknowledges Sol exceeds user intent more than GPT-5.5. Keep Sol out of production systems, use permission scoping, and maintain backups. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/Ngs2ikVVA)
