# Atlas of the brain’s striatum could guide researchers to new drug treatments

**[MIT News](https://daily.dev/sources/mit)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

MIT researchers built a new atlas of the brain's striatum using single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, identifying 31 neuron subgroups based on gene expression. The work reveals why dorsal striatal neurons are more vulnerable to Huntington's disease, identifies neuron populations linked to addiction, depression, and schizophrenia, and shows species differences between human and mouse opioid receptor expression that could improve substance use disorder models. The study, led by Myriam Heiman, Manolis Kellis, and Dana Gabuzda, appears in Cell.
