Audacity 4.0 beta 2 is now publicly available, featuring the biggest UI overhaul in the project's history. The interface has been rewritten in Qt, replacing the long-standing wxWidgets frontend, while the core audio engine remains largely unchanged via an au3wrap compatibility module. New features include a redesigned envelope tool, spectral editing, lead-in recording, multi-project support, VST3/AudioUnits/LV2 plugin support across platforms, and built-in cloud saving via Audio.com. Some Audacity 3.x features like LADSPA plugins, Vamp analysers, and tempo tracks are missing in this beta. Audacity 3 project files can be opened in 4.0, but reverse compatibility is unlikely. The beta is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, though stability is not guaranteed.
