# Australian Government Is Open But Not Yet Discoverable By Agents

**[API Evangelist](https://daily.dev/sources/apievangelist)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A survey of 13 Australian government API publishers found strong publishing but almost no agent-readiness. 12 of 13 have developer portals and 7 of 13 publish their own OpenAPI contracts, the highest portal rate of any sector, tech included. But zero have an MCP server, zero have an A2A agent card, zero publish OAuth protected resource metadata, and only 2 have an llms.txt file. Several agencies also turn automated visitors away: the ATO and Public Transport Victoria answer with an anti-bot challenge, data.gov.au returned a 503, the ABS serves a JavaScript-only shell, and Services Australia and the Australian Digital Health Agency did not answer probes at all.

## Questions this post answers

### How many Australian government agencies have an MCP server for their APIs?

None of the 13 Australian government API publishers surveyed have an MCP server, an A2A agent card, or OAuth protected resource metadata. Only 2 of the 13 publish an llms.txt file on their own domain, despite 12 having developer portals and 7 publishing their own OpenAPI contracts.

### Why can't AI agents access some Australian government APIs even when documentation exists?

Several agencies block automated visitors before an agent can reach their published contracts. The ATO, data.gov.au and Public Transport Victoria return anti-bot challenges or a 503 error, the ABS serves a JavaScript-only shell requiring rendering, and Services Australia and the Australian Digital Health Agency do not respond to probes at all.
