# Auto mode is now Claude Code's default, and it changes how fast you can actually build

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Anthropic switched Claude Code's default behavior to auto mode for all Pro, Max, and Team plans as of August 14, replacing the old per-action permission prompts with a classifier system that vets tool calls before execution and only stops for irreversible or destructive actions. The change was driven by data showing 97% of permission prompts were approved anyway. A fallback exists: three blocked commands in a row or twenty in a session reverts a run to manual mode, and classifier tokens aren't billed on paid plans. The piece also covers practical safeguards developers should adopt, including settings.json permissions.allow/deny lists, running risky work in disposable VMs, committing to Git before long runs, and scoping credentials tightly since users, not the agent, are now the bigger risk factor.

## Questions this post answers

### What changed with Claude Code's default permission mode on August 14?

Anthropic set auto mode as the default for all Pro, Max, and Team plans, removing the requirement to approve every tool call. Instead, a separate classifier system screens actions and only stops to ask when something looks irreversible, destructive, or aimed outside the user's environment. Anthropic made the change because 97% of permission prompts were being approved anyway.

### What happens if Claude Code's classifier blocks too many actions in a row?

If the classifier blocks three commands in a row, or twenty across a single session, Claude Code automatically drops back into manual mode requiring explicit approval again. Tokens used by the classifier itself are not billed on Pro, Max, or Team plans, so the safety check adds no extra cost to those subscriptions.

_Anyone relying on Claude Code's guardrails can follow tooling updates like this on daily.dev._

### How do permissions.allow and permissions.deny settings interact with Claude Code's classifier?

Rules set in permissions.allow and permissions.deny run before the classifier, so any tool explicitly covered by either setting skips the classifier check entirely, saving time. This makes the settings.json file more important under auto mode than it was before, since it now determines which actions bypass review altogether.

_Teams configuring agent permissions can keep up with practical guardrail tips on daily.dev._
