PBR allows forwarding decisions based on source/destination IPs, ports, and protocols — not just destination IP. This eliminates the need for complex multi-VPC architectures previously required for traffic steering or workload isolation. Administrators define ordered policy rules associated with Transit Gateway attachments, enabling use cases like routing traffic through AWS Network Firewall, directing traffic over Direct Connect or VPN by source/port/protocol, and isolating production from development environments.
