# AWS contributes a large-transaction binary log optimization to MySQL

**[AWS Database Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/aws-database-blog)** · 9 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AWS contributed an optimization called BOLT (Binary Log Optimization for Large Transactions) to community MySQL that removes a binlog commit bottleneck. Previously, committing a 50 GiB transaction could lock the binlog for about 7 minutes, blocking every other commit. With BOLT, commit latency for large transactions stays around 2 to 2.5 seconds regardless of size. It also speeds up crash recovery, cutting a 4-minute recovery for a 50 GiB transaction down to about 0.1 seconds in benchmarks, and improves throughput, roughly 2.8x to 3.1x in benchmarks. BOLT has run in Amazon Aurora MySQL since v1.22.0 and is planned for a future MySQL innovation release.

## Questions this post answers

### What does BOLT do to fix MySQL binlog commit latency for large transactions?

BOLT (Binary Log Optimization for Large Transactions) promotes a transaction's spill file directly into the binlog sequence instead of copying its events into the main binlog file, making commit latency a small fixed cost independent of transaction size. In AWS benchmarks, a 50 GiB transaction's commit dropped from about 7 minutes to about 2.5 seconds.

### How much faster is MySQL crash recovery with BOLT enabled for large transactions?

Crash recovery of a large transaction drops to about 0.1 seconds with BOLT enabled, versus roughly 4 minutes for a 50 GiB transaction without it. This is because BOLT's Large_transaction_header_event stores the offset of the transaction's terminating event, letting recovery seek directly there instead of scanning the whole transaction body.

### Which MySQL and Amazon Aurora versions include the BOLT binlog optimization?

BOLT has been running in production in Amazon Aurora MySQL since v1.22.0, and it is enabled by default in all currently supported major versions: Aurora MySQL 2.x, 3.x, and 8.4.x. It is also planned to ship in a future MySQL community innovation release, with no required application changes.
