# AWS Expands EC2 Instance Offerings with Enhanced Performance and Flexibility

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AWS launched five new EC2 instance types optimized for different workloads across multiple regions. The I7i instances offer 50% better storage performance for I/O-intensive tasks. C8i and C8i-flex instances deliver up to 60% performance gains for compute-heavy applications with custom Intel Xeon 6 processors. R8a instances provide 30% better performance for memory-intensive workloads using AMD EPYC processors. M8a instances target general-purpose computing with 30% performance improvements. U7i instances now available in Europe offer 6TB memory for large-scale in-memory databases. All instances feature enhanced networking capabilities and flexible purchasing options.

## Content

AWS has broadened its EC2 instances portfolio with the release of five distinct instance types, each targeting specific workloads and now available in various regions. These releases showcase advancements in both compute and storage performance, powered by cutting-edge processors and enhancements to the AWS Nitro System.

### EC2 I7i Instances
The EC2 I7i instances have been launched in AWS GovCloud (US) regions. These storage-optimized instances offer a notable 23% improvement in compute performance and a 50% boost in storage performance compared to their predecessors, I4i instances. They are powered by 5th Gen Intel Xeon processors and 3rd Gen AWS Nitro SSDs, providing up to 45TB NVMe storage with lower latency. With eleven sizes available and network bandwidths reaching up to 100Gbps, the I7i instances are ideal for I/O intensive workloads requiring high random IOPS and real-time latency for massive multi-TB datasets.

### EC2 C8i and C8i-flex Instances
In an effort to cater to compute-heavy workloads, AWS has released the C8i and C8i-flex EC2 instances across four AWS regions. Featuring custom Intel Xeon 6 processors, these instances include up to 384 vCPUs and 768 GiB memory. The C8i instances boast a 60% increase in performance for web applications and a 40% enhancement in AI recommendation models. The C8i-flex variant provides a 5% better price-performance at a 5% reduced cost, making them efficient for dynamic workloads. Customers have multiple purchasing choices including On-Demand, Savings Plans, and Spot instances.

### EC2 R8a Instances
For memory-intensive workloads, AWS introduced the R8a instances, equipped with 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors operating at up to 4.5 GHz. These instances surpass the R7a model with a 30% uplift in performance, 19% better price-performance, and 45% more memory bandwidth. Available in twelve sizes across US East and US West regions, the R8a instances are built on the AWS Nitro System and are particularly suited for SQL/NoSQL databases, in-memory caches, real-time analytics, and electronic design automation (EDA) applications. With SAP certification, they offer 38% higher SAPS than their R7a counterparts.

### EC2 M8a Instances
Utilizing 5th Gen AMD EPYC Turin processors, the newly launched M8a instances are perfect for general-purpose workloads. Comparing to M7a instances, M8a offers a 30% enhancement in performance and a 19% better price-to-performance ratio. Supporting up to 192 vCPUs, 768 GiB RAM, 75 Gbps networking, and 60 Gbps EBS bandwidth, these instances are suitable for gaming, financial apps, machine learning inferencing, video encoding, and application servers. They are offered in ten virtualized sizes and two bare-metal configurations across US East, US West, and Europe regions, with flexible purchasing options.

### EC2 U7i Instances
Now available in the Europe (Stockholm and Ireland) regions, the U7i instances cater to large-scale, memory-demanding applications. Equipped with 6TB memory, they feature custom Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, 448 vCPUs, DDR5 memory, and up to 100Gbps network bandwidth. These instances are optimized for in-memory databases like SAP HANA, Oracle, and SQL Server, which demand high memory capacity and transaction processing throughput.

With these new offerings, AWS continues to provide tailored solutions that meet the diverse needs of various computing and storage workloads globally.
