# AWS Lambda announces self-managed code storage

**[AWS](https://daily.dev/sources/aws)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AWS Lambda now supports self-managed Amazon S3 buckets for code storage, allowing functions and layers to reference deployment packages directly from your own S3 bucket without Lambda creating intermediate copies. This removes the previous 75GB per-region code storage limit (now also increased to 300GB for Lambda-managed storage), reduces function activation time by eliminating the copy step, and keeps a single source of truth in your own account. No extra Lambda charges apply — you pay only for standard S3 storage. To enable it, set `S3ObjectStorageMode` to `REFERENCE` when creating or updating functions via CLI, CloudFormation, SAM, or SDKs, and grant the Lambda service principal the necessary S3 permissions. Available in all commercial AWS Regions.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I enable self-managed S3 code storage for an AWS Lambda function?

Set the S3ObjectStorageMode parameter to REFERENCE when creating or updating functions and layers through the AWS CLI, CloudFormation, SAM, or AWS SDKs, or update it via the Lambda Console. You must also grant the Lambda service principal s3:GetObject and s3:GetObjectVersion permissions on the S3 bucket holding the code.

### What is the default code storage limit per Region for AWS Lambda functions and layers?

Lambda-managed code storage now defaults to 300GB per Region per account, up from the previous 75GB limit. Customers deploying many functions or large Lambda layers previously had to file support tickets to raise the 75GB quota; self-managed S3 storage removes this cap entirely since Lambda references code in the customer's own bucket instead of copying it.

_Teams sizing Lambda deployments can track quota changes like this through daily.dev._

### Does using self-managed S3 storage for Lambda code incur additional Lambda charges?

No additional Lambda charges apply for self-managed code storage; customers only pay standard Amazon S3 storage rates and, where applicable, cross-Region data transfer fees. This differs from Lambda-managed storage, where deployment packages are copied into Lambda's own storage and counted against the per-Region code storage limit.
