# AWS Lambda supports Seekable OCI (SOCI) lazy loading for Lambda Managed Instances

**[AWS](https://daily.dev/sources/aws)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AWS Lambda now supports Seekable OCI (SOCI) lazy loading for container images on Lambda Managed Instances. Instead of downloading the full image upfront, Lambda streams only the files needed at each startup stage, cutting container startup times by up to 70%. To use it, create a SOCI index for your image, push it to Amazon ECR, and set the function's image URI to the SOCI-indexed tag. Lambda then auto-detects the index and enables lazy loading with no extra configuration. The feature works in all AWS commercial regions where Lambda Managed Instances is available.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I enable Seekable OCI (SOCI) lazy loading for my AWS Lambda container image?

Create a SOCI index, which acts as a table of contents for your image layers, and push it to Amazon ECR. When creating or updating a Lambda function on Lambda Managed Instances, set the image URI to the SOCI-indexed tag (e.g. my-function:v1-soci) and publish a function version. Lambda automatically detects the index and enables lazy loading with no extra configuration.

### How much faster does Lambda container startup get with SOCI lazy loading on Lambda Managed Instances?

Container startup times can be reduced by up to 70%. Instead of downloading an entire multi-gigabyte container image before a function can run, Lambda streams only the files needed at each stage of execution environment startup, which removes the multi-minute delay that large images previously caused when provisioning new environments.

_Developers scaling container-based Lambda workloads can follow updates like this on daily.dev._
