AWS, Microsoft and Google unite behind Linux Foundation DocumentDB database to cut enterprise costs and limit vendor lock-in

Microsoft's open-source DocumentDB database project has moved to the Linux Foundation with backing from AWS and Google, creating the first vendor-neutral alternative to MongoDB. Built as a PostgreSQL extension with BSON support and MongoDB driver compatibility, DocumentDB aims to reduce enterprise costs and eliminate vendor lock-in for document database workloads. The project includes AI-optimized features like vector indexing algorithms, making it particularly suitable for AI applications that require semi-structured data storage.
