# Rust Foundation names first Maintainers in Residence cohort

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 5 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

The Rust Foundation and Rust Project have selected their first cohort of Maintainers in Residence and Maintainer Grant recipients, funded by a $350,000 pool from Google, AWS, OpenAI, and the Rust Project Leadership Council. Six people were named: Gen Li (full-time, rustup), Alejandra González (half-time, Clippy), Chris Denton (half-time, Windows compiler/stdlib work), León Liehr (half-time, rustdoc), Jonas Böttiger (grant, Library Team), and Jason Newcomb (grant, Clippy). Positions run at least 12 months, targeting areas judged critically underfunded. The Foundation is also seeking smaller donations via GitHub Sponsors, noting a full-time role costs about $120,000 per year.

## Content

The Rust Project and Rust Foundation have named their first group of funded maintainers through the new Maintainers in Residence (MiR) program.

## Who's in the cohort

Five maintainers received MiR positions and two received Maintainer Grants:

- **Gen Li** – Rustup and toolchain work, full-time
- **Alejandra González** – Clippy, half-time
- **Chris Denton** – compiler, standard library, Rustup, and Windows-specific work, half-time
- **León Orell Valerian Liehr** – rustdoc and compiler, half-time
- **Jonas Böttiger** – Library Team (Maintainer Grant)
- **Jason Newcomb** – Clippy (Maintainer Grant)

All positions run for at least 12 months.

## How it's funded

The program draws from the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund, which raised $350,000 from Google, AWS, OpenAI, and the Rust Project Leadership Council. Individual sponsors can also contribute via GitHub Sponsors. A full-time MiR costs around $120,000 per year, so individual contributions add up.

## How recipients were selected

A small Funding Team ran the selection process, prioritizing teams identified as critically underfunded relative to their impact on the ecosystem. The areas covered — Rustup, Clippy, rustdoc, the compiler, and the standard library — are all foundational pieces that don't always get the sustained attention they need.

More funding announcements are expected as the program continues.

## Questions this post answers

### Who was selected for the Rust Foundation's first Maintainers in Residence cohort?

Five maintainers received Maintainer in Residence positions: Gen Li (Rustup and toolchain, full-time), Alejandra González (Clippy, half-time), Chris Denton (compiler, standard library, Rustup, and Windows-specific work, half-time), and León Orell Valerian Liehr (rustdoc and compiler, half-time). Jonas Böttiger and Jason Newcomb received Maintainer Grants for Library Team and Clippy work respectively. All positions run at least 12 months.

### How is the Rust Foundation's Maintainers in Residence program funded and how much does a full-time position cost?

The program draws from the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund, which raised $350,000 from Google, AWS, OpenAI, and the Rust Project Leadership Council, with additional individual contributions accepted through GitHub Sponsors. A full-time Maintainer in Residence position costs around $120,000 per year, meaning individual donations meaningfully add up toward supporting these roles.
