Code to the Moon

Helix text editor is finally getting a plugin system via a long-running PR (open since October 2023). The chosen plugin language is Steel, a Scheme/Lisp dialect embeddable in Rust applications. The post covers Steel basics, how to install and write plugins using .scm files, the forge package manager, and existing community plugins like oil.hx and a Vim emulation plugin. It also discusses community debate around the choice of Steel over Rust or Lua for plugins.

Beloved Text Editor Getting Most Anticipated Feature

Not a fan of functional programming, but extensibility will be huge for helix.
Since it’s so batteries included, I think most useful plugins will be pretty small.

Not sure how I feel about this, last thing I would want is helix turning into some form of neovim

it would have been great if they just used lua rather than creating a new lang just for plugins
