**[The Daily WTF](https://daily.dev/sources/thedailywtf)** · 4 min read · 34 upvotes · 5 comments

## Summary

A narrative about navigating the challenging 2025 job market follows Ellis through her emotional response to months of unsuccessful job applications. After attending a job hunting seminar, she uses cognitive reframing techniques from psychology books to combat anxiety and depression, viewing rejections as part of a search algorithm rather than personal failures. The piece shares coping strategies including recognizing emotions early, reframing negative thoughts, and finding meaning in the struggle by planning to help others through writing about the experience.

> Job hunting content usually focuses on *tactics* like resume tips and interview strategies, not the **emotional devastation** of prolonged unemployment. By centering the psychological experience and that near-breakdown moment, this piece validates what many job seekers feel but rarely see acknowledged.

> I think a key takeaway from this is to not take rejection personally. We have all been rejected time and time again, but also selected time and time again. We have a track records of success, and selection/rejection often comes down to the subjectivity of the hiring team and their (often highly flawed) processes and criteria. One's trash is another's treasure, as they say, and most people throw out the old box of magazines without realizing there is a rare edition in mint condition in the pile.

> I'm actually going through entry level job hunting this month. Sometimes its hard to not take job failures personally. I try to be positive about it and see it as a progress and there is light at the end of the tunnel. However, it's easier said than done.

> My take now is to view it in a way that fuels my desire to level up and invest in my own knowledge even more. Whenever I think like this, it helps me add a little extra motivation to keep moving forward.

Consider these key benefits:\n\nIt removes moral judgment from rejection\nIt reframes “failure” as necessary information-gathering\nIt could genuinely help people avoid the shame spiral that often accompanies unemployment\n\nThe metaphor works because:\n\nAlgorithms don’t experience shame when they hit dead ends\nEach rejection becomes data rather than personal failure\nThe process transforms from something wrong with me to iterative problem-solving\n\n\nWhen the algorithm encountered a dead end, did it deserve blame? Was it an occasion for shame, embarrassment, and despair? Of course not.\n\nThis cognitive reframing could make the difference between staying functional and spiraling into hopelessness during an extended job search.","datePublished":"2026-01-02T01:05:34.164Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/0Ibfiv5VU#c-AZ3bXk8EZ","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Serhii Kolodych","url":"https://daily.dev/serhiikol","image":"https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/a/ACg8ocLIT51ZUB-4C9FRKeaclaZRSNAYkRRK650zZPTkVx8t9NhY=s96-c"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":2}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"I think a key takeaway from this is to not take rejection personally.
