# Biboumi – XMPP gateway to IRC

**[Lobsters](https://daily.dev/sources/lobsters)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Biboumi is an XMPP gateway that bridges IRC servers so that any XMPP client can access IRC channels as if they were XMPP multi-user chat rooms. Documentation covers the project's homepage and forge locations for the open-source codebase.

## Questions this post answers

### How can I access IRC channels using an XMPP client?

Biboumi is an XMPP gateway that connects to IRC servers and translates between the two protocols, letting any XMPP client join IRC channels as if they were XMPP multi-user chat rooms. It acts as a bridge, so no native IRC client is required.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 2 discussions and 8 comments across lobsters, hackernews (as of 2026-08-19).

**TL;DR:** Most feedback is positive, with users praising the gateway as a smooth, reliable way to access IRC through XMPP clients, though a couple of people report stability issues or noisy chat lists, and the maintainer is actively soliciting bug reports.

**Sentiment:** 70% positive · 25% mixed · 5% skeptical

**The case for**

- Described as the nicest IRC bouncer some have used
- Works well even with high-traffic channels and integrates nicely with media sharing via Prosody
- Enables a clean, unified XMPP client experience for IRC without needing separate tools

**The pushback**

- One user experienced instability and random bugs, leading them to switch to a self-hosted IRC web client
- No way to ignore/mute individual users within a group chat
- Related bridges for Matrix and Signal are seen as not yet fully reliable

**By community**

- lobsters (positive): Several long-time users report a very positive, stable experience, with only isolated complaints about bugs and missing moderation features.
- hackernews (mixed): No comments were available to gauge sentiment.

**Open questions**

- Whether the related Matrix/Signal bridging tools (matridge, Slidgnal) will mature enough to match the IRC gateway experience.

**Highlights**

> I use it with Prosody and I'm very happy. I run Gajim on my desktop and Conversations on my Android phone, and the IRC experience is excellent. I love that I can share media normally and the IRC users see a link to the content in the files service in Prosody. One downside though is that there's no way of ignoring users on a group chat. Is not a feature I use often, but FYI. Other than that, I'm in an actual XMPP group chat and I have currently zero contacts in XMPP, but this setup is just perfect for IRC. I was a happy weechat user and I don't miss it. I'm in three different IRC networks and it handles the lobsters channel, the busiest channel I am in, just fine.

> I used to use this but it was not quite stable & I had random bugs. My chat list also was way too full and noisy. I now moved to a self-hosted IRC web client and am much happier. Not everything that looks like chat should have the same interface. It would be nice to have my Signal & the very few Matrix chats in XMPP though. But those bridges are also not quite ready.
