# Big Tech's AI commitments top $3 trillion, with Alphabet above $1 trillion

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Big Tech's future AI spending commitments have topped $3 trillion, according to Bloomberg. Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle now carry that total in data center, lease, equipment and energy obligations. Leases make up $1.3 trillion and other orders about $1.9 trillion. Alphabet leads at over $1 trillion, nearly eight times its year-earlier figure, while Meta sits at $810 billion. Alphabet's 10-Q also discloses that autonomous AI agents have sometimes taken actions outside their intended scope during testing.

## Content

Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle now hold more than $3 trillion in future commitments for AI data centers, leases, equipment and energy, according to Bloomberg. Future leases account for $1.3 trillion of that, and other orders for $1.9 trillion. In July, four of the five were at about $2.4 trillion, and Oracle wasn't counted.

## Who owes what

Alphabet leads with more than $1 trillion, nearly eight times its level a year earlier. Its latest 10-Q shows $924.4 billion in purchase commitments that aren't on the balance sheet. Of that, $802.1 billion is for infrastructure, energy and content, mostly to be fulfilled through 2031. Google Cloud's contract backlog rose to $560.8 billion from $513.9 billion. That includes $16.8 billion from a multi-year deal with Crux AI, a related-party joint venture.

Meta is next at more than $800 billion (one count puts it at $825 billion, another at $810 billion). Just under half is tied to data center leases that haven't started, running up to 30 years.

Amazon's commitments reached $883 billion, more than double a year ago.

## The cash isn't keeping up

Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft plan more than $740 billion in capex this year. Alphabet posted negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion last quarter on $51.4 billion of capex, and its stock fell 12% in one day, its worst ever. Amazon's free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion over the 12 months to September. Meta had a $2.1 billion outflow in Q3. Microsoft is the only one still cash-flow positive, at $18.6 billion.

Debt is filling the gap. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle have raised a combined $326 billion in 2026, triple last year's amount. The biggest AI spenders owe about $350 billion together. Gartner has warned that much of this spending may never pay off.

## Amazon: strong growth, more spending

AWS revenue grew 39% to $46 billion in Q3, its fastest pace in almost five years. Operating income rose to $17.8 billion from $11.4 billion. The annual run rate is $184 billion and the backlog is $578 billion. Andy Jassy expects AWS revenue to grow more than 40% in both 2027 and 2028, and Amazon expects to spend "meaningfully more" on AI in 2027. Late that year it plans to start selling its Trainium chips outside AWS.

Amazon has also set up a supplier financing facility to borrow up to $80 billion against the hardware it buys. It can be drawn from the start of 2027 until the third quarter of 2028, and lenders get rights over some of the purchased equipment. Its debt already passed $225 billion in June after a $17.5 billion loan led by Citigroup.

## S&P turns negative on Meta

S&P Global Ratings cut its outlook on Meta's AA- rating to negative from stable. It says Meta can monetize AI less easily than Amazon, Microsoft or Google, because it has no cloud business renting out computing power. S&P expects leverage to rise above 1.0x as soon as 2027, from about 0.1x last year. Meta had a $2.12 billion free cash outflow in Q3 and has begun a $35 billion share sale. Spokesperson Kamran Mumtaz said the company disagrees with S&P's assessment.

## A risk note in Alphabet's filing

The same 10-Q says autonomous AI agents have sometimes taken "actions outside of their intended scope" during testing. It warns that errors in multi-step AI tasks could compound into failures or unauthorized actions.
