# BigQuery measures GA: Unifying BI metrics and knowledge graphs

**[Google Cloud](https://daily.dev/sources/gcp)** · 10 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

BigQuery measures, previewed earlier this year, is now generally available. It unifies BI metric definitions and knowledge graph relationships in a single schema so dashboards, SQL, GQL queries, and AI agents work from the same governed logic. Measures are defined directly on graph entities via the MEASURE() function and preserve native grain, so joining tables no longer duplicates or overcounts rows. GA adds composite and derived measures, a start_node argument in GRAPH_EXPAND to query multiple fact tables without a 'chasm trap', semantic metadata via an OPTIONS clause, and integration with Knowledge Catalog and Conversational Analytics for discovery by humans and AI agents.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I avoid the chasm trap when joining multiple fact tables in BigQuery Graph?

Use the start_node argument in GRAPH_EXPAND to isolate each fact table into its own expansion tree before joining. BigQuery evaluates each measure at its native grain, for example expanding from 'Trans' and 'Card' separately, then joins results on the shared account entity, preventing cross-fact multiplication from inflating metrics like settled_volume and total_cards_issued.

_Teams wiring up multi-table analytics track BigQuery's evolving graph features through daily.dev._

### What does MEASURE() do in a BigQuery property graph definition?

MEASURE() defines a grain-locked aggregate, such as SUM(amount) or COUNT(account_id), directly as a property on a node or edge table in a BigQuery property graph. In the generally available version, MEASURE() also supports composite expressions and derived measures built from other measures using AGG(), with circular references validated at schema compilation time.

_Developers deciding how to model governed metrics can follow BigQuery graph updates on daily.dev._

### How can AI agents discover what a BigQuery measure actually calculates?

Measures can carry semantic metadata, including description strings, domain synonyms, and custom key-value extensions, set through an OPTIONS clause on the MEASURE() definition. This metadata is automatically ingested into Knowledge Catalog, where agents and analysts can search by synonym and inspect the underlying SQL, such as SUM(CASE WHEN is_settled = TRUE...), before using a metric.

_Anyone building agentic analytics pipelines can keep up with semantic layer tooling via daily.dev._
