## Summary

A self-published paper by Jan Klein tracing the history of the binary digit from ancient civilizations through Leibniz, Boole, Shannon, and Turing, then connecting it to a proposed 'Understandable AI' (UAI) framework that prioritizes transparency over black-box systems. The paper extends E=mc² into gravity, electromagnetism, and the Higgs mechanism to argue that bits underpin physical reality, and introduces bit.rf.gd — a non-governmental people network where verified humans (treated as bits) collaborate without anonymity, bots, or corporate data ownership.

## Abstract

The binary digit is the smallest unit of information and the largest unit of trust. This paper traces the bit from ancient duality in Egypt, China, and India through Leibniz, Boole, Shannon, Turing, Tukey, Feynman, and Klein. It shows how the bit becomes the foundation of Understandable AI (UAI), a transparent architecture that replaces black box systems. It builds a bridge between UAI and quantum physics using three extensions of E=mc squared: gravity, electromagnetism, and the Higgs mechanism. The quantum bit (qubit) opens the door to superposition. Every human is a bit. bit.rf.gd is a non governmental people network where bits bridge real life and online production.

Keywords: binary digit, bit, qubit, Understandable AI (UAI), E=mc squared extensions, quantum physics, people network, non governmental

## 1. History of the Binary Digit

The binary digit did not begin with computers. Ancient Egypt used binary-like doubling. Ancient China used broken and unbroken lines in the I Ching. Ancient India used light and heavy syllables as proto bits.

Leibniz formalized binary arithmetic in 1689. Boole created Boolean algebra in 1854. Shannon showed relays could implement logic in 1937. Turing introduced the universal machine with a binary tape in 1936. Tukey coined the term bit in 1947. Feynman proposed quantum computing in 1982. Klein developed Understandable AI (UAI) from 2016 to 2026.

## 2. The Bit in Understandable AI (UAI)

Most AI systems today are black boxes. Models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek process billions of bits but hide their reasoning. Explainable AI (XAI) tries to reverse engineer decisions after the fact.

Understandable AI (UAI) builds transparency from the beginning. Every decision leaves a trace. Every bit is accounted for. UAI follows the Klein Principle: intelligence is worthless if it cannot be communicated.

UAI has three core principles: Architectural Simplicity, Cognitive Load Reduction, and Design Time Transparency. It follows seven key principles: Transparency, Privacy, Understandability, Reliability, Security, Accountability, and Integrity.

Open source tools already exist using UAI: Scientific Search Engine (SSE), P3C Planner, VoiceScribe, and X Astroids. Jan Klein created these tools alone.

## 3. The Bit in Quantum Physics: Three Extensions of E = mc squared and the Quantum Bit

Three extensions of E = mc squared reveal the binary structure of reality.

Extension one is gravity. For a particle in a weak gravitational field, energy includes the gravitational potential. The bit is the smallest measurable difference in gravitational energy. Confirmed by Pound and Rebka in 1959.

Extension two is electromagnetism. For a charged particle in an electromagnetic field, energy includes electric and magnetic potentials. The bit is the photon. Every electronic circuit runs on this principle.

Extension three is the Higgs mechanism. For elementary particles like electrons and quarks, mass comes from coupling to the Higgs field. The bit is the difference between a particle having mass or having no mass. Confirmed by the ATLAS experiment in 2012.

Beyond the classical bit is the quantum bit or qubit. A classical bit is zero or one. A qubit can be both at the same time in superposition. When measured, the qubit becomes a classical bit. Quantum computers use qubits to perform calculations that classical computers cannot.

## 4. The Bridge Between UAI and Quantum Physics: Closing the Loop

The universe operates according to physical laws. Particles cannot choose to ignore gravity. Humans also operate under these laws, but humans have choice. We can choose justice or injustice, truth or lies.

The bit is the common unit. A physical bit is enforced by the universe. A human bit is enforced by accountability. When we build UAI systems that are transparent and verifiable, we make AI adapt to the same binary accountability that the universe already uses. When we build bit.rf.gd with real people, no avatars, and no anonymity, we make human society adapt to the same binary honesty that physics already requires. Justice is adapting to physical laws, not fighting them.

## 5. Humans as Bits

Every human being is a bit. Alone, a single bit is almost nothing. When bits connect, they form everything. A person is present or not. A person trusts or does not trust. These are binary states.

When billions of humans act as bits, collective intelligence emerges. Cognitive capacity scales with the number of binary connections between people.

bit.rf.gd connects only verifiable human beings. No avatars. No anonymous accounts. No bots. Trust is built through real world connections. If you meet someone in person, you can vouch for them.

## 6. bit.rf.gd: A Non Governmental People Network for Real Life and Online Production

bit.rf.gd is not a corporation or a government. It is a people network. It bridges three domains.

From real life to online. A conversation becomes searchable text. A sketch becomes a digital event.

From online to real life. A UAI analysis informs a medical decision. Digital code becomes a physical prototype.

From people to each other. People build real things together, from community gardens to software.

No corporation owns the data. No government controls the information. The network is governed by its users through transparent protocols.

The bit is the smallest unit of information. bit.rf.gd is the largest unit of trust.

## 7. The Future of bit.rf.gd: Bridging All Gaps

bit.rf.gd will bridge all AI tools that follow UAI principles. A user asks one question and receives answers from multiple transparent AIs.

bit.rf.gd will bridge all social media platforms. Your real identity lives on bit.rf.gd. You own your bits.

bit.rf.gd will bridge all scientific platforms. Knowledge becomes a connected graph.

By the people, for the people. Every member contributes. Every member has a voice.

From bit to universe. The door is open.

## How to Join

Read this paper. Understand the bit. Use the open source tools: SSE, P3C Planner, VoiceScribe. They work in your browser. No installation needed. Build something together. Invite others. The network grows one verified human at a time.
