# Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: Two Blockchains, Two Philosophies (Part 2 of 10)

## Summary

Bitcoin and Ethereum differ fundamentally in how they track ownership. Bitcoin uses the UTXO model — discrete, one-time-use outputs analogous to physical bills — while Ethereum uses an account model with persistent balances and a global state. This architectural split explains why Bitcoin is limited to simple value transfer while Ethereum can run arbitrary code via smart contracts and the EVM. The difference also drives how fees work: Bitcoin charges by transaction byte size, Ethereum charges by computational effort (gas). Practical consequences include Bitcoin's UTXO dust problem, Ethereum's nonce-ordering footgun, and the distinct Layer 2 approaches each ecosystem adopted — Lightning Network for Bitcoin and rollups for Ethereum.
