Bluesky has launched group chats supporting up to 50 participants and announced plans to build Reddit-style communities with custom handles. The strategic pivot comes as Bluesky's growth has stalled at 44.8 million registered users, far behind X's 600 million monthly actives and Threads. Communities will be built on the AT Protocol, offering public, invite-only, or private spaces with user-controlled moderation. The timing is notable as X recently shut down its own Communities feature. Bluesky is betting that depth of engagement and user-owned spaces on an open protocol can differentiate it from Big Tech competitors, even if raw user numbers remain much smaller.
