Bluesky has launched group chats supporting up to 50 members in app version v1.124, marking a strategic shift toward community-focused features. The move comes as Bluesky's growth has slowed at 44.8 million registered users compared to X's 600 million monthly actives. Group chat creators can manage membership and generate shareable invite links, while users can control who can invite them. Media sharing is not yet supported pending moderation systems. Bluesky's head of product outlined plans for dedicated community spaces with their own handles, public/private/invite-only settings, and integration with the AT Protocol. The timing coincides with X shutting down its Communities feature due to low usage and spam.
