# BMW I3 Mod Brings Small Trucks To The EV Future

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Michael Pick converted a BMW i3 into a utility vehicle. He started with a new 12V battery and a cleanup, then stripped the interior and removed the hatch to cut away the back half of the cabin. The new bed is plywood coated in penetrating epoxy and bedliner for weatherproofing, with a sealed interface protecting the main electronics housed in a compartment below. Taillight electronics were rehoused since the original lenses didn't fit next to the new tailgate opening.

## Questions this post answers

### How did someone turn a BMW i3 into a pickup truck?

Michael Pick converted a BMW i3 by removing the back half of the cabin and the hatch, then building a truck bed from plywood coated in penetrating epoxy and bedliner. He sealed the cabin-to-bed interface to protect the vehicle's main electronics, housed in a compartment below, and rehoused the taillight electronics since the stock lenses were too large for the new tailgate opening.
