# Brain-like Computers Can Do Math, Too

**[IEEE Spectrum](https://daily.dev/sources/ieeespectrum)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Sandia National Laboratories researchers demonstrated that neuromorphic computing hardware can solve complex mathematical problems using the finite element method, challenging the assumption that brain-inspired computers are only good for approximate, pattern-recognition tasks. Using Intel's Loihi 2 chip with over 1 billion digital neurons, they successfully solved partial differential equations commonly used in fluid dynamics, mechanics, and electromagnetics. While current energy efficiency advantages are modest, the team expects clearer benefits at larger scales as methods are optimized for neuromorphic hardware.
