Brave has launched Brave Origin, a paid minimalist version of its browser priced at $59.99 as a one-time purchase for up to 10 devices. Linux users get it free.
Origin strips out Leo AI, Brave Rewards, Brave Wallet, Brave News, VPN, Tor, email aliases, Speedreader, and sponsored images. What remains is the core browser with Brave Shields — the ad and tracker blocking that made Brave popular in the first place. It’s available either as a standalone app or as an add-on to the existing free browser. Brave says purchases are handled via a blind token protocol based on Privacy Pass, so payment identity isn’t linked to browser usage.
The free version of Brave isn’t going anywhere. Brave has been clear that it remains fully supported.
The reaction has been predictably skeptical. The core complaint: Brave added all these features over the years without users asking for them, and is now charging $60 to take them back out. A fair number of people have pointed out that most of these features can already be disabled through enterprise group policies in the free version — which raises a reasonable question about what exactly you’re paying for beyond convenience.
There’s something a bit odd about the logic here. If the features were worth adding, why sell a version without them? If they weren’t, why add them? The charitable read is that Brave is trying to serve two audiences — users who want the full ecosystem and users who just want a clean, private browser — and is pricing accordingly. The less charitable read is that this is a feature-toggle panel that should have existed from the start, now repackaged as a product.
Either way, the free Brave browser works the same as it did yesterday.

Yeah, good luck with this idea. I use Brave, but paying that much to remove things is nuts. I’d be willing to pay, say $20, and tell myself it’s to support the browser maker. But that’s about it.

That said, in today’s sick world, I cherish every offer, that is actually a one-time purchase, not tied to any subscription, whatsoever. So, am grateful for that. ;)

I think there is a lot of missing context from this: It is $60 on non-open source operating systems, but free on open source operating systems (eg: Linux). The idea is to incentivize debloated open-source OSs over hyper-inflated sloppified OSs (Windows and macOS)…

This is one of the clever way of getting money from the features that is already developed. If most of them are not using it, instead of directly removing it, try if anyone wants to pay to remove it before there remove it for free may be in future
