Breaking Into A Prison Tablet

A hardware hacker receives a decommissioned US prison tablet and documents the process of breaking into it. The tablet is sealed in an opaque plastic case with only four metal pads (USB pins) exposed. A hacksaw teardown reveals a Windows 10 Home installation locked to kiosk mode, running on an Iview Optimus-C-8001 with an Intel Atom Z8350 and 2 GB RAM. The device was likely discarded due to a faulty third-party charger board. Since there's no drive encryption, the Windows install is fully bypassed, revealing an unpatched 2018 OS image. Despite the crude case construction, the underlying tablet hardware is serviceable for its specs.
