# Bringing psql's \d to your web browser

**[Neon](https://daily.dev/sources/neontech)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Neon's SQL Editor now supports psql backslash commands like \d and \l in the browser. The author explains how psql introspection commands are actually C-code routines in the psql client that generate SQL queries — not server-side features. Rather than compiling the C code to WASM via Emscripten, the author translated the C source to JavaScript using regex-based transformations and reimplemented C/Postgres helper functions. A separate open-source package was also built to correctly split SQL strings into individual statements by parsing identifiers, comments, and string literals to find significant semicolons — enabling the SQL Editor to handle mixed SQL and backslash commands client-side.
