Linux 7.2 brings significant Btrfs file-system updates. Large folios support, introduced experimentally in Linux 6.17, is now enabled by default, offering single-digit percentage performance improvements for real-world workloads. Huge folios up to 2MB are also landing as an experimental feature. Other notable changes include a new ioctl for returning raw checksums to user-space, a stable UUID for OverlayFS use-cases, bio size limits to reduce latency spikes with a reported 15% sequential write improvement, removal of forced direct I/O serialization yielding over 60% throughput gains, memcg allocation performance improvements, and the removal of 2K block size support.
