## Summary

Cloud budget alerts notify teams of overspending but require manual intervention to stop costs. This post explores automating cloud cost controls on GCP using Terraform, Cloud Billing Budgets, Pub/Sub, Eventarc, and Cloud Functions to automatically disable billing when a predefined budget threshold is reached — acting as a kill switch rather than just a notification.

## Content

Most cloud teams have budget alerts configured, but alerts still rely on someone noticing the notification and taking action before costs continue to increase.

That made me wonder how others are handling this.

- Do you automate any response when cloud spending exceeds a threshold?
- How do you protect development or sandbox projects from unexpected cloud costs?
- Have you built any automated cost guardrails into your cloud infrastructure?

I recently came across an interesting approach that uses **Terraform**, **Cloud Billing Budgets**, **Pub/Sub**, **Eventarc**, and **Cloud Functions** to automatically disable billing once a predefined budget threshold is reached. It's an interesting alternative to relying solely on email alerts, especially for non-production environments.

I'm curious to know how your team handles cloud cost control. Do you rely on alerts, automated guardrails, or something else?
