# ByteDance rents a fifth of China’s data centre capacity, SemiAnalysis says

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

SemiAnalysis research estimates ByteDance occupies about a fifth of China's delivered data centre capacity, nearly all of it rented, making it the primary customer for wholesale data centre operators nationwide. China now has over 24GW of capacity, more than EMEA combined, tracked across 1,000+ facilities and 60+ operators. Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu spent $20bn on capex in Q2, more than double year-over-year, with all three posting negative free cash flow for the first time. Including private ByteDance, the four firms spent roughly $50bn in 2025 and are on pace for $100bn this year. Construction is shifting inland to places like Inner Mongolia under the 'Eastern Data, Western Compute' policy, where power costs about half as much as in major cities, while older retail data centre stock near cities runs at only 30-50% utilization and is largely unsuited for AI workloads.

## Questions this post answers

### How much of China's data centre capacity does ByteDance use?

ByteDance occupies roughly a fifth of China's delivered data centre capacity, and it rents nearly all of it rather than owning it, according to SemiAnalysis research. This makes ByteDance the key customer for essentially every wholesale data centre operator in the country, despite being a private company that discloses no financial filings like a 10-K.

### How much capacity does China have compared to Europe and the Middle East?

China has more than 24GW of data centre capacity, which exceeds the roughly 14GW combined across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to SemiAnalysis's China Datacenter Model, which tracks over 1,000 facilities run by more than 60 operators.

### Why is data centre construction moving to Inner Mongolia in China?

Construction is shifting inland under China's 2022 'Eastern Data, Western Compute' policy, and Inner Mongolia has become the default site for large AI campuses because power there costs roughly half the price of China's biggest cities. ByteDance runs campuses in Datong, Wuhu and Inner Mongolia, and registered two new entities in Ningxia in July.
