## Summary

A deep dive into the mysterious first line of the 1980 BASIC game 'The Wizard's Castle', originally published for the Exidy Sorcerer microcomputer. The cryptic REM statement `"_(C2SLFF4` turns out to be Z80 machine code embedded directly in a BASIC comment, used to seed the game's pseudo-random number generator. The code reads the Z80 R register (which increments on every instruction fetch), stores a non-zero value into the lower-right corner of the screen's memory-mapped display, and then a subsequent PEEK reads that value to seed RND(). The investigation reveals that the printed ASCII characters in the magazine listing don't correspond to actual ASCII bytes — the Sorcerer's BASIC interpreter maps certain byte values to multi-character display strings, meaning anyone who typed the listing from the magazine would have gotten non-functional code. The author likely POKEd the machine code in directly and never documented how to reproduce it.
