# C64 Finally Gets The SRAM Corporate Wouldn’t Pay For

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Commodore 64 originally used cheaper DRAM chips instead of SRAM due to cost constraints in 1981. As original DRAM chips age and become unavailable, hobbyist Fabio Battaglia (hkzlab) created an open-source adapter board that allows modern, easily-available SRAM chips to be used as replacements in C64s with the 250407 motherboard. The project is a practical solution for the retrocomputer community facing the eventual exhaustion of old DRAM stock.
