# Can gzip be a language model?

**[Lobsters](https://daily.dev/sources/lobsters)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Explores whether gzip can function as a language model by exploiting the compression-prediction equivalence from information theory. Since DEFLATE encodes repeated byte sequences cheaply, a corpus-primed gzip window acts as an implicit probability model. A beam search algorithm called gzipt scores candidate continuations by compressed length, generating Shakespeare-like text without any neural network or learned parameters. The implementation is pure Python using zlib, with key design choices like limiting context tail length to avoid verbatim copy loops.
