Canonical has become a Gold Sponsor of the Trifecta Tech Foundation, committing €40,000 per year to fund memory-safe system utilities written in Rust. Building on their earlier collaboration that brought sudo-rs as Ubuntu's default privilege escalation tool in 25.10 and 26.04 LTS, the current focus is ntpd-rs — a Rust rewrite of NTP time synchronization software. Canonical plans to include ntpd-rs in Ubuntu 26.10 for testing, with a goal of making it the default time sync tool in Ubuntu 27.04. The funding also covers feature parity work including GPSd support, multi-threading, AppArmor/seccomp profiles, and gPTP support for automotive use cases. ntpd-rs is already proven in production at Let's Encrypt since June 2024.
