Charting your team's knowledge & skills map

A practical management exercise for engineering managers: building a team knowledge and skills map using a simple spreadsheet. The map covers four categories — product areas, tech stack, core/soft skills, and non-engineering skills — each scored on a basic/good/expert scale. The author shares their own results and explains how to use the map in 1:1s and for identifying hiring or training gaps. A secondary exercise uses Unblocked's open-source Social Graph Builder to visualize collaboration patterns from GitHub PR history, revealing who works with whom and where knowledge is siloed.
